Substrate turns sales data into package specs, specs into pounds of each material, and pounds into each state’s categories and rates.
A drawing in four stages, lighting in turn: Sales, Specs, Materials, States. Sales is a small ledger of four items from the demo catalogue, each with a bar for how many were sold. In Specs, four packages drawn in wireframe come apart into their components: a cold cup and its lid, tagged PET and PET lid; a foam clamshell that hinges open, tagged PS foam; a fry carton, tagged Paperboard; and a bag, tagged Kraft. Light trails carry each component into Materials, a stack of five bars whose lengths are the weight of each material, in pounds. From there the weight flows into four state cards. Oregon keeps five lines, pricing the PET cup and the PET lid separately; on Colorado's card the lid's bar slides up and joins the cup's, because Colorado prices them as one line. Each priced line ends in a marker for its price per pound; foam sits far to the right, paper near the left. California and Maryland show the weight in outline and read: no rate yet. Then everything folds back into the four packages and the sequence repeats. The data is synthetic.
